Liberal Democrat calls for scrap on student tuition fee subsidy
A policy of scrapping subsidies of student fees and moving to a system of supporting students’ escalating living costs could restore trust in the Liberal Democrats among the student population, a senior Welsh figure in the party has suggested.
Education spokesman Aled Roberts, an Assembly Member for North Wales, said the party policy could increase access for students from deprived backgrounds in Wales, which he claimed was worse than the rest of the UK.
The phased policy would see the withdrawal of the grant to Welsh students to pay for tuition fees and create financial assistance for living costs in its place, through a Student Living Support Grant which could be set at around £2,500 a year, costing around £165m …
