A shortage of dedicated post-secondary student beds is exacerbating rental housing supply in Metro Vancouver, where rental vacancy rates recently reached a low of about 1%.
According to a new report by Real Estate Investment Network Canada, which compiled findings from various other studies and reports, there is currently a shortage of over 14,300 student beds in Vancouver.

Councillors have slammed a series of safety issues and failings uncovered at a student accommodation block in Lancaster.

£61m flats set to bring 794 beds to Sheffield city centre
Diggers have moved on to the old Grunwerg site on Rockingham Street, which is set to be transformed into five blocks up to 17 storeys high with 794 beds.
Some 691 will be for students, with an additional 103 beds in up-market ‘build-to-rent’ flats aimed at young professionals. There will also be a commercial unit.
Welsh building company Watkin Jones is behind the project and has already agreed to sell it to AIG Global Real Estate. It is set to complete in stages between August 2021 and the end of March 2022 …

Plans from Study Inn for a student accommodation development at Lambert House in Talbot Street, Nottingham have been approved by the City Council.
The offices were previously the home of Experian. Study Inn Group, which manages more than 1800 student rooms across the UK, acquired Lambert House in February.

Co-living developer The Collective and real estate investment manager DTZ Investors are seeking £650m [$825m] in pledges and plans to invest in six to ten fund to buy and build communal housing projects in London.
The COLIV venture, believed to be the world’s first, aims to make ‘lonely’ renters something of the past and drive them away from sky-high house prices towards more niche, alternative co-living accommodation.
