Imperial to build 700 student flats after £30m buy
Essential Living has sold half its Perfume Factory scheme at Old Oak Common to Imperial College London for £30m.
Imperial bought half the west London scheme, for which planning consent was secured last year for 550 build-to-rent units.
The college plans to develop about 700 student accommodation units at the west London site, where Essential Living will continue to build 450 units, including affordable housing. Both organisations will submit new planning applications …
Building work starts on £17m student accommodation in Derby
Building work has begun on a nine-storey 244-bed student accommodation block in Derby city centre.
The £17 million complex is being built next to the existing copper-clad University of Derby law department on the corner of Ford Street and Agard Street.
Plans for the massive student block were given the green light in November 2015. The developers, Jensco (Derby) Ltd, also secured permission for a stair connection to nearby Friar Gate Bridge, which is to be transformed into a “community space” …
Student accommodation in Newcastle – is the city really bursting at the seams
Newcastle’s seemingly ever growing student population has led many to claim that the city is at saturation point.
So much so that earlier this month Newcastle City Council adopted tough new rules to prevent student “ghettos” developing in the city.
But where does Newcastle sit nationally? In the last 15 years higher education numbers have risen by 16% from 1.9 million in 2000 to 2.3 million in 2015 …
Work gets underway building student flats in Belfast city centre
Work has started on a 474 bedroom block of student flats in the middle of Belfast.
Building firm Gilbert-Ash says they hope to have the project, at Great Patrick Street, finished by the end of August, 2018.
The build contract is being valued at £22 million, which is part of an “overall investment” of £37 million in the development by Olympian Homes. The work is expected to be finished ahead of the opening of Ulster University’s new Belfast city centre campus …
Comprehensive study of Cambridge’s student accommodation
A study into student accommodation undertaken on behalf of Cambridge City Council has indicated that the council’s approach, within its emerging Local Plan, to providing accommodation for students while also safeguarding market and social housing, remains appropriate as the city grows in the coming years.
The study, which was commissioned to provide an overview of current student accommodation supply and demand, will be used by the council and partners to inform the developing plans for accommodating students here.
It shows that in 2015-16, there were an estimated 46,132 students in Cambridge with a need for some form of accommodation …
Crosslane plans student tower for Coventry
A planning application has been submitted for a 19-storey student accommodation tower in Coventry.
Crosslane Student Developments wants to build the 583-bed development on Friar’s Road, close to Coventry University campus and the city centre.
Proposals are to develop the site into a new purpose-built 19-storey student accommodation scheme, comprising 140 studios and 443 en-suite cluster flats …
Rent bills high enough to make any student rebel
More than 150 students in two halls of residence at University College London are currently on a rent strike, demanding a 40% cut in their weekly accommodation fees.
The problem is places like Max Rayne House – a self-catered student house where a twin room costs £102.97 a week while a one-bed flat is £232.40 and bathrooms are shared between 10-13 people.
David Dahlborn, a third-year history student and one of the campaigners, reckons the rising rents “will lead to a growing student debt crisis” and says the blame for increasing costs lies at least partly with new specialist private providers of student accommodation, who are in the business for profit. He says: “The private sector is pushing rents up year after year, and universities like UCL are pushing their rent up as well.”
Building and providing student accommodation is a growing sector of the property market. Investors have been piling in, including private equity firms, to take advantage of the boom in purpose-built student housing. A record £6bn was invested in it last year – more than in north America, according to law firm Addleshaw Goddard…
Former nightclub to be student accommodation block, Nottingham
FHP Student Living have been instructed to market and manage the new student accommodation development, ‘Hydrogen-Urban Student Living’, next to The Theatre Royal and adjacent to Nottingham Trent University City Campus on Goldsmith Street.
Planning permission has been granted to convert the building, formerly known as Barrasford House and Madison’s night club and more latterly Halo Nightclub, into 162 studio apartments. Just 150 metres from Nottingham Trent University’s Newton building, the studios will be available from September 2016 and once fully let, FHP Student Living will sell the investment…
New Fallowfield student flats set for refusal, Manchester
A new student housing development in the centre of Fallowfield is likely to be turned down next week after a wave of objections from neighbours.
Developers want to build 28 flats across the road from the Owen’s Park halls of residence – but nearby residents have complained in their droves.
The plans would see a four-storey block of apartments built on Carrill Drive, on the car park behind Ladybarn House halls of residence.
Applicants Accrue Student Housing have already scaled back the proposals from 44 flats after objections late last year, but scores of neighbours have still demanded the latest plans be rejected…
